'DRM-protected' means that you need Adobe Digital Editions to export the EPUB or PDF on to a device made by another manufacturer than Kobo. The DeDRM plugin can remove DRM from Kindle eBooks, Barnes & Noble ePub ebooks, any ebooks using Adobe Digital Editions DRM (this includes ePubs from Kobo, Google Play, and Sony that are downloaded for Adobe Digital. However, it is possible to remove DRM by adding the DeDRM plugin for calibre.

When you download an EPUB or PDF file, you can export it as: Calibre cannot, on its own, remove DRM from ebooks.
